Adult Study for Lent: Handel’s Messiah

Guided by Calvin Stapert’s book Handel’s Messiah: Comfort for God’s People, we will listen to and reflect on scenes from Handel’s Messiah oratorio, discussing both what has made it so musically enduring as to become the oldest continuously performed work in the Western musical canon, and how it exemplifies and enhances the musical imagery and verbal message of the Christian story it tells, using Old Testament verses considered by Christian scholars to foreshadow the coming of Christ, and New Testament verses recounting His life, death, resurrection, and second coming.

Join Steve Black-Schaffer this Sunday morning at 8:45 in the parlor for the first of our classes. Books have been ordered and will be available to pick up on Sunday. This study will span the 6 weeks of Lent, February 22 through March 29.

To prepare for our first class, download and read a PDF of Chapters 6 and 7, HERE.
