Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day

As this Sunday is Mother’s Day, I’m thinking of the most famous, exemplary mother in Christendom. The words of Mary as she learns that she will bear the Son of God are full of awe and hope.

Bringing a child into the world is a radically hopeful act. Bringing the Hope & Light of humanity into the world is the most radically hopeful act of all.

The English composer Herbert Howells sets the words of Mary in an incomparably powerful way. Happy Mother’s Day.

This week’s Musical Meditation was performed by the Choir of Kings College Cambridge, directed by Stephen Cleobury

What Are We Doing During Communion?

What Are We Doing During Communion?

There are people who attend Crawford with backgrounds in many different Christian traditions as well as those with little to no church background at all. That means there are many understandings of what it means to share the bread and cup as we celebrate Holy Communion. What is it, exactly, that we think we’re doing during that time? Since this is a Communion Sunday, it seemed like a good time to lift up this question from the list of issues you have submitted.

My response is that trying to think it through is probably not helpful. There is more to be gained by living it.

Earth Day Music Meditation

Earth Day Music Meditation

As we take a moment to pause and acknowledge the beauty of the Earth, this most precious and grand gift, I am reminded of a quintessential piece of choral music: Earth Song, by Frank Tichelli. Growing up in rural Montana, I first encountered this work as a student in High School. I was instantly captivated by it.
Tichelli’s treatment of tension, resolution, pain, relief, all a reminder of our stewardship of this irreplaceable planet. All a reminder of the rhythm of life and, indeed, our own lives.
This week’s Musical Meditation was performed by Roots in the Sky (rootsinthesky.org), a Montana-based professional choir, under the direction of Andrew Major.

Earth Day

Earth Day

This week we are pleased to welcome Dr. Jed Lindholm to the Crawford pulpit to offer his reflections on Earth Day and how our faith might shape our actions as we face the climate crisis. This was one of the topics you suggested for our series and is one of Dr. Lindholm’s passions. He will join us not only for Sunday morning under the tent, but also for the Zoom sermon talkback at 7:00 p.m. Pastor Anne will be at worship Sunday morning and the host of the sermon talkback in the evening.

More about Dr. Jed Lindholm

Dr. Lindholm is married to Mary, is a father of four, and lives in Sterling, MA. His Christian worship tradition is as a Lutheran in the ELCA, and he has been brought into a daily practice of devotional reflection through the Upper Room Disciplines. He began collaboration in faith competency with Pastor Anne through going the “extra mile” in all three volumes of her Exploring the Bible: The Dickinson Series Bible studies. His professional career is in human resources as a compensation consultant. He teaches leadership, teaming, and organizational dynamics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
