In the spirit of addresses to graduates at ceremonies across the country, I’ll be looking at the life lessons we can learn from the timeless story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17. Whatever our age and stage, it is a fact of life that there will come a day when we are faced by a giant that seems utterly too big and too powerful. This story is way more than a Sunday School classic. It holds the imagination of the world because of the lessons and truths that it teaches. Join us on Sunday to celebrate our graduates and to think about this enduring story.

At his ascension, Jesus promised his disciples that, “you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (Acts 1:5) That day, Pentecost, is what we are celebrating this week. It is described in Acts 2. Pentecost was a Jewish festival before it was a Christian one. In this sermon, we look at what the Jewish festival of Pentecost was meant to remember and explore what that might tell us about what it means to be “baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

In several places, the Bible gives us a vision of what a world of peace might look like. In the 19th century, Quaker minister and American painter Edward Hicks turned the vision from Isaiah 11 into a series of 62 paintings known together as the Peaceable Kingdom. (One of which is pictured here.)
But as some have noted, “If you’re going to have the wolf lying down with the lamb, you’re going to have to keep replacing the lamb.” How should we view the utopian visions the Bible gives us? Are they helpful to our lives or do they keep us stuck in false hope until we run out of lambs?

For our third week of understanding what it takes to turn death into life, we will take a look at the way Jesus expanded his ministry, not just after he was gone, but during his own lifetime. Of course we know he picked twelve people right at the start of his ministry, but it sometimes flies under the radar that Jesus also picked 72 others to help him transition from place to place. “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few,” Jesus tells them in Luke 10:2. Ain’t it the truth?
